What Is a Chrome Delete? Coverage, Finishes and What It Costs You in Time

Short answer: a chrome delete wraps the factory chrome trim (window surrounds, grille, badges, door handles) in black vinyl for a blacked-out look. Nothing is removed or painted; it is reversible and usually done in one to two days.

What a chrome delete is

A chrome delete is a partial vinyl wrap applied only to the bright trim on a vehicle. The chrome is not removed and not painted; it is covered with black film that is cut and tucked to follow each piece of trim. The result is the blacked-out look that BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Tesla and Range Rover charge for as a factory package, on a car that did not come with it.

What can be covered

Window surrounds are the big one and make the most difference. Then the grille surround, badges, mirror caps, door handles, roof rails, fog-light trim, lower door trim and exhaust tips. Some trim pieces have compound curves or sit under rubber seals and cannot be wrapped cleanly; we will tell you which ones on your car.

Gloss, satin or matte black

Satin black is the default and matches most factory blackout packages. Gloss black matches piano-black interior trim and looks like paint but shows swirls. Matte is the most aggressive and needs the most care. Bring the car and hold the samples against your paint in daylight.

Why edges matter

A chrome delete lives or dies on its edges. Trim has to be cleaned, the vinyl heated and stretched around every curve, and the edges sealed so they do not lift in a car wash. This is why a cheap chrome delete peels at the corners in six months and a proper one lasts years.

Care and removal

Hand wash, avoid brush car washes and pressure-washing the edges. The film is reversible: it peels off and the chrome underneath is untouched, which matters on a lease.

Quick answers

Common questions

What is a chrome delete on a car?

Wrapping the factory chrome trim (window surrounds, grille, badges, handles) in black vinyl for a blacked-out look. Nothing is removed or painted, and it is reversible.

How long does a chrome delete take?

Usually one to two days at Iconic, depending on how much trim the vehicle has and whether you add mirror caps, roof rails or handles.

Is a chrome delete permanent?

No. The vinyl peels off cleanly and the chrome underneath is untouched, which makes it safe on leased vehicles.

Satin or gloss black for a chrome delete?

Satin black matches most factory blackout packages and hides swirls; gloss black looks like paint but shows swirls more. Most customers choose satin.
